So I've been hennaing my hair for...several years. Inevitably its gotten darker, and darker, and darker...and now its just downright garnet. Pretty in the sun but very fake looking, a totally different color at the roots than the tips (yeah I know, I didn't do root touch-ups properly, my fault)...
My plan right now is to wean off the henna by using 24-wash temporary red dye to touch up the roots and grow the garnet stuff out.
BUT I've heard that henna and chemical dye don't get along. I don't know how, turn your hair green or somesuch. Ofcourse I'm going to do a lock test first but....
Anyone have problems with weaning your hair off of henna? Mixing henna with dye? Before I've layered black dye over the henna without an issue, but I'd like some case studies...pretty please.

Re: Sick of the henna on the hair
Sat, July 21, 2007 - 5:19 AMThere's lots of good info at www.hennaforhair.com. From what I've read there, if you used 100% pure henna, you can safely dye over it with chemical dyes. If you used compound henna, which contains metallics, etc., you might have a problem and should definitely strand-test first.
There are also tips for lightening the too-dark effect, tips for making the color more even, etc.
Good luck -- I know how miserable I felt when my hair color wasn't right! I recently started using henna and love the results so far. Your experience makes me realize the importance of doing proper touchups, so I hope I get better at it!
