black henna- now i am worried

topic posted Mon, June 26, 2006 - 8:04 AM by  Margot
Two days ago I went to an Indian fair and had black henna done on my hand. The artist told me to leave it on as long as possible and to then add sugar and lemon before washing my hands (FYI the artist and all her friends and children, and a good chunk of the festival's attendees, were sporting black henna, too). It came in a traditional paper tube, had an Indian 'vegetarian suitable' symbol on it, and went on as a very dark green paste. It burnt a little while it dried.

However, it is jet black (was a bit dark green when it came off) and is almost purplish around the edges in certain areas. Could it be PPD? How long before symptoms of PPD poisining appear? Does everyone have an allergic reaction?

Thanks, I am worried, obviously!

  • Margot, I forgot to add that typically the problems don't start for several days and then the redness, itching, blistering begins. If this happens do not hestate -go to the Doctor armed with your information on black dyes. There is a link on our site to give the information you will need if this happens.

    • Thank you very much Flavia! I will keep that information should I have a reaction (never had an allergy to anything in my life so I am praying that my luck won't change).

I guess what I was wondering: the way this information is presented on most sites makes it look like everyone has a reaction. I was wondering if anyone on this message board has come away from a black henna experience with no reaction...
      • The danger is not that you might have a reaction-it is that it is a transdermal toxin and it IS in your system. The next time you come into contact with any black dye could be the time you have a problem.

Many people have had this done with no visible ill effects.
But there is no way to know how many are now suffering because they don't know they were sensitized to PPD by putting it on their skin.
Then when of if you have a reaction to dye, you don't connect it to the PPd topical application for which you had no reaction .
It is just dangerous-now you know so you won't do it again probably.
        best of luck

  • Definitely sounds like PPD if it was black and it burned. Hope all is okay and you don't end up with problems. It's a good thing to look at the henna applier's own designs to see if they are brown or black. This usually indicates what they will be using.
